High School: Announcements

Computer Grant

by Colleen Stachowiak

November 09, 2009

The Washington County Riverboat Foundation generously funded a grant for 32 ACER laptop computers to be used in Highland’s mathematics classrooms. Students are using the computer program Geometer’s Sketchpad in order to develop their reasoning in mathematics and to create mathematics in the classroom.

Students have thus far completed activities involving the Pythagorean Theorem and properties of parallel lines. Students in 8th grade and the Informative Geometry class have had the opportunity thus far to use the computers. Students in Geometry will soon be using the computers to explore the concept of slope. Working with these mathematical concepts on the computers provides a concrete understanding of the topics, and also helps students remember the material because they constructed it on their own.

The students enjoy working with the computers because it allows them to be creative in the classroom and provides a new way of working with mathematics. The added technology in the classroom adds a new dimension to learning mathematics!
